If we needed any convincing that climate change was an existential issue requiring urgent action, 2023 should have been the year that succeeded in getting our attention. We had extreme fires, floods, and other extreme weather events. Cycling as climate action can help.
We’re pausing to reflect, and looking back, 2023 was a year of major transition.Ā While itās always easy to wish we had accomplished more, itās important to recognize progress and milestones. Getting Cycling Guide into the hands of more cyclists is an achievement that weāre proud of.
Weāre focussed on enabling cyclists to get from their starting point to their destination using the best available low-stress, cycling-centric routes. We believe that these routes are just whatās needed for people who want to cycle more in their daily lives but lack the experience, knowledge, or confidence to do so comfortably.
Itās been a busy summer for us here at the Cycling Guide Foundation. Weāve been working away on many behind-the-scenes aspects of the Cycling Guide mobile app, and have just released the newest version to everyone.
OSM is well aligned with one of the goals of Cycling Guide Foundation: to provide a hyperlocal resource for anyone who would like to find their way on a bicycle, no matter what their experience or confidence level. And as we tune Cycling Guideās handling of the OSM data, the app is generating fantastic routes that, wherever possible, avoid the need to travel with heavy traffic.
One reason we can improve our routing quickly is that we can update OSM data as new cycling infrastructure opens in the real world or as we discover issues in its data. Hereās how data-related improvements to our routing happen.
Cycling tourism is an area of great potential for Waterloo Region, according to industry insiders. Sitting just 3 km north of the City of Waterlooās northern boundary and 12 km from downtown Kitchener, St. Jacobs is determined not to miss out.
Cycling Guide Foundation is the new, not-for-profit home for the Cycling Guide mobile app. And weāre excited about the potential of the app to get more people out of their cars and onto their bikes.
